ಚಳಕಾಯಿ ~ Indian Cherry
Chala Kaayi ~ Indian Cherry is a seasonal fruit. The tree grows in Malnad region, usually not seen in plains. The fruit has a thick dark green skin, inside is a hard seed covered in clear sticky liquid. There's one variety which has slightly thinner skin. The cherry grows in summer usually February to April. It is used for making pickles. Oil, salt, red chilly powder are the basic ingredients; ready for consumption after 4 to 6 weeks. Chala Kaayi Uppinkaayi goes well with rice or if the skin is still crunch it can be eaten like a snack too.

pine cones at Botanical Garden
Pines usually grow in high altitudes, in cool climatic conditions. Botanical Garden of Karnataka University is home to a dozen of these beautiful trees, The tree's fruits drop off during the beginning of rainy season. They are lovely little woody things, can be used as decorative items. I used to have two of them on my table for years, they added some beauty to the table.

Ankur School, Tumkur
This post has been created for Vinayak Umesh. Following pictures and text are all Vinayak's contribution.
Welcome to Ankur Shaalae |
"I love my school Ankur, it is neat & tidy, we have a small garden, a centre stage and a small playground. It is a school with difference, which tries to imbibe our traditional values along with curriculum. Curriculum includes academic, physical activities like Karate, Football, Volleyball and skill development mental activities such as craft making, art competitions and card makings."
"Principal of the school is Mrs. Sharmila Akka (we call all our teachers "Akka" in our school). She is kind and gentle. My school has classes starting from pre-primary to high. We celebrate many National days like, Environmental Day, World Ocean Day, Independence Day etc. Religious festivals like Gowri-Ganesha, Ramzan and Christmas are also being celebrated. We celebrate Annual day and expo every alternative years. For the annual year 2014, we had a science expo (1-5th std), whereas higher class students (from 6th to 10th std) enacted a drama on Children’s Rights. I along with my classmates, exhibited a model for “water treatment."
"I feel proud about my school, because beginning with 12 students and 3 teachers, within a period of 14 years now it’s a vital learning centre for almost over 300 students with 35 teachers. I feel proud about my school and my Akkas.."

Ye Kaisa Rishta Hai
Ye kaisa rishta hai
jise na nibha paate hai
Na tood paate hai.
Phir bhi janmo tak
Salamat rahe
Yeh dua karte hai.
Ye kaisa bandhan hai
Jise na yaad karte hai
Na bhul paate hai
Saapno me hi sahi
Sang raho
Yeh tammanna rakhte hai.
Ye kaise lou hai
Jise na jala sakte hai
Na bujha paate hai
Sulagti rahe
Dil me sada
Ye saja lete hai.
Ye kaisa rog hai
Jise na dikha paate hai
Na chiipa paate hai
Dard ko gale se laga
Mann me basaye phirte hai.
Ye kaisa rishta hai

Teachers Training College, Dharwad
One of the British time buildings of Dharwad. This group of buildings were built to accommodate railways offices but with change of plans the buildings were used as army barracks. Then the buildings were given to run a college for training teachers.. which still continues. The uniqueness of the main building is a pair of towers - the twin towers of Dharwad.
