Mohan Vilas

My favorite restaurant in Dharwad. Once in two weeks I come here for breakfast, normally idlis and occasionally vada. I have sabudani vada or pav-bhaji if I go there evenings. And definitely coffee is the best in entire Dharwad. I've noticed people like poori-bhaji here.

That's the place; between Dodmani Bharat Petroleum outlet and Presentation Convent, opposite Kittur Chennamma Park on Belgaum Road.

Mohan Vilas Restaurant started off in this simple tiled roof place in 1943. Late Shri. Vinayak Subbarai Kamat is the founder, and grandfather of present day owner Vasant Kamat. However the business originally was started in 1934 at Mahishi Bungalow.

The open kitchen lets you see what goes on inside... it's pretty clean and well maintained. The management runs the place efficiently and has regular customers. The other open kitchen places I like are at Bangalore; Mavalli Tiffin Room, near Lalbagh main gate and Hotel Fish Land, Majestic area.

What I like about the place; cleanliness, simplicity and good service. Near by is Kamat Bakery & Provision Stores owned by the same family. They are open Tuesday through Sunday with Monday weekly off.

I like Mohan Vilas's Avalakki and Ras Bhaaji. His Ras bhaaji is supposed to be the oldest dish. My grandpa was a frequent visitor to that restaurant.

Unhappy to say that Mohan Vilas shut down operations few months back. Dharwad has one less decent restaurant :(
